Why it matters

Canopy shades streets, holds stormwater and cools neighborhoods unevenly. A tree removed today is replaced by a sapling that will not do the same work for decades, and the gap is rarely stated when a permit is decided.

Scope

Daily and weekly tree loss, scaled canopy and roots, age and regrowth, cause, permits, ecosystem services and cumulative neighborhood effects.

How it is measured

Tree loss is counted from removal permits, not from observation. Canopy area is estimated separately, because a tree count is never equivalent to canopy area. Ecosystem services follow the i-Tree Eco methodology, and replacement parity is a range rather than a date.

Measures

T01 answers two questions a resident can act on: how much of Cambridge is under tree cover and how that changed, and what is being removed, why, and who decided. Cambridge publishes a great deal about the canopy as a whole and almost nothing about what a specific removal costs the neighbourhood — so this tracker states the citywide picture as sourced fact, states the removal picture as an explicit named gap, and never converts one into the other.

How these are measured

Three tree counts, and why none of them is the answer
This page carries three published counts of trees and they count three different populations: crowns traced from aerial LiDAR across every ownership, trees the City says it maintains, and rows in the street tree layer. The street tree layer is not a fourth count, because each of its rows is a SITE — which may hold a tree, a stump, a retired site or nothing at all. No arithmetic anywhere on this page converts any one of these into another, or converts any of them into canopy area. The unit classes are written out per measure so that a future edit cannot add them by accident.
Absolute change and relative change are different measures
The assessment publishes both, and they answer different questions: one is the change in the share of land under canopy, expressed in percentage points, and the other is the change in canopy area against the canopy area at the start of the period. Rendering the first as a percentage is what turns an absolute change into a relative one in a reader's head, so it is rendered in percentage points here — which is how the report's own key-terms page defines it.
The source defines its own relative-change formula three ways
The assessment's key-terms page bases relative change on the canopy area in 2018. Its narrative subtracts the 2024 area from the 2018 area before dividing by the 2018 area, which would make a gain read as a loss. The caption of the figure on that same page states a 2024 denominator. Only the 2018 denominator reproduces the published headline. We publish the headline as the report publishes it, publish the recomputation separately with a Calculated badge, and record the discrepancy rather than choosing quietly on the publisher's behalf.
The source publishes two values for 2018 and labels them inconsistently
The assessment's prose states that the earlier report's 2018 figure was revised upward by the latest assessment, and gives both values. The time-period chart on the same page assigns the lower value to 2018 and the higher value to 2020. Both readings are published, neither is withdrawn, and which one is right changes the size of the published absolute gain. The measure is stated as Disputed and both claims stay visible.
The City modelled two services and published them as indices
The assessment ran the Urban Flood Risk Mitigation and Urban Cooling modules of the InVEST tool over the 2024 canopy and published each result as a map on a scale from zero to one. An index of relative capacity is not a volume of water and not a temperature. There is no defensible conversion from either to physical units, so this page states the indices as what the City published and states the volume and the temperature as measures nobody has published.
Why no permit count appears anywhere on this page
The permit dataset is real, published weekly, and would answer several of the measures above today. Every count from it is withheld anyway. A figure typed by hand out of a one-off query carries no snapshot, no checksum, no reviewer and no correction history, and a weekly feed makes it stale between one reading and the next. Field completeness is described here in words rather than in counts for the same reason. When the build-time ingest lands, each of these measures becomes Calculated, carrying its query as its method and its snapshot date beside the number.
Two fields in one dataset answer the same question differently
The permit dataset carries both a reason category and a separate dead-or-dangerous field. Grouping on one and grouping on the other do not produce the same number of dead-or-dangerous removals. Neither field is wrong; they are differently defined, and the dataset does not say how. Any breakdown this site eventually publishes must name the field it grouped on and publish both totals, because a single figure would conceal a discrepancy that is itself worth knowing about.
Mitigation payments are not a measure of canopy lost
Mitigation is waived in several named circumstances, and it can also be fully satisfied by replacement planting, in which case nothing is paid. Most permits carry no recorded fee and the record does not say which explanation applies to any individual one. So a fund total measures receipts and not trees, and the arithmetic that would recover trunk inches from dollars runs over a subsample selected by the very rule that decides who pays.
The report's equity analysis is cited as the report's
The canopy assessment includes its own analysis relating canopy to block-group demographics. This tracker does not restate that analysis as a finding of its own, publishes canopy at neighbourhood level and no finer, and carries no demographic field in its data model at all. Readers who want that analysis should read it in the source, where its method and its caveats travel with it.
Roles are recorded separately and never joined
Owner, applicant, the certified arborist the owner retains, the City Arborist, the Commissioner of Public Works, the Commissioner of Inspectional Services, the Planning Board, the City Treasurer and the removal contractor are nine separate roles, each with its own citation. One person may hold more than one of them, and the record does not say so. Two roles appearing on the same permit is co-occurrence, not a relationship. This module exports no relationship type, so there is nothing for a page to render even if someone wanted it to. The City's own application page supports the separation: City Arborist and Urban Forestry staff cannot serve as the certified arborist for a private removal.
What this site publishes from the permit record, and what it does not
The permit record identifies households. A tree removal maps to one address and often to one family. So the field policy in this module is exhaustive over the dataset's own column list and denies by default: any column not classified is not published. Applicant name, full address, coordinates, parcel identifier, attestation signature, free-text notes, arborist certification number and financial-assistance status are all denied by name. Location is published at neighbourhood level; a street is published only where a k-anonymity threshold holds across the whole period shown, and never together with a date and tree detail for a residential permit. Company names are published only as an aggregate count of distinct companies. Public officials appear in their official role and nowhere else.
There is no canopy score
It would be easy to combine extent, change, distribution, structure, the loss record and services into one number, and that number would be used. The moment it were used, the dimensions would become decoration and the weakest one would disappear — and today the weakest one is services, where the City has published two indices and no physical quantity at all. So the dimensions are shown separately, and the only summary this module offers is which dimension is weakest, expressed as a dimension name.
